A triple threat of reviews today for Micah Castle. All short reads, each one stranger than the last. Micah Castle is an expert at setting tone and atmosphere, then taking the reader through an experience that cannot be predicted or imagined, except by the author himself.
First up, THE WOMEN WITHOUT EYES, the longest of the three stories, follows a detective on the case of a serial killer, in a town already being stalked by another madman. Readers begin to see much more to the tale as more is revealed about the detective and about the suspect. As family secrets are revealed, ties to the occult and ancient rituals are discovered, and the story ends in a manner which no one expects. I enjoyed how weird this one got, as is something Micah is known for. Overall, enjoyable with truly disturbing imagery, and well-written, complex characters.
The second book, HOMECOMING only has 56 pages but manages to pack a punch. Small-town horror meets cosmic horror in this action-packed novella that follows a young man’s return to his hometown for the funeral of a friend. Once there, weird things start happening, that rapidly devolve into a night of fight or flight for Jake. With no options left to escape except one, Jake ventures into the darkness of the one place he’s always feared the most, the basement of his childhood home, or more accurately, beneath it. What he discovers may very well break his sanity or save his life. I love weird rituals and occult themes, so I really enjoyed this story, including the very unexpected twists it took.
The third story, INEVITABILITY, takes the reader on a trippy ride into the future where everyone has a computer chip in them. When a woman turns up dead, Detective Vos must figure out why, but before he can gain any information, her chip is stolen. A gritty crime story with a futuristic bent, this mystery packs a lot into a very short space, including the incredibly imagined city that Micah builds around it. It’s a quick read that may make you wonder what an acid-trip is like — another Castle tale with a twist.
