Just when I think I might not have any more stories to write an author's note for, I think of two or three more. As odd as it seems, I haven't written a note about Bishop yet, so here goes.
Some days I really wish that I had a bigger reason as to how my stories originate, or where their idea came from, but the truth is most of my work comes from conversations with my family and friends. Bishop came from a conversation that I had with my oldest friend in the world. My only friend from the small-town that I was raised in. His name is actually Bishop, so yes, the book, the beast, and the man are all named after this person.
While the real-life Bishop is not Native American and the character is, they embody the same ideals and traits. Independent, protective, rugged, and both contain a beast inside that will appear when friend or family is threatened.
The character and the idea of a were-bear both were born from that single conversation about my books, my next project, etc. Small talk that just evolved into ideas, concepts, and storylines. The book is dedicated to Bishop, as is the series, which I felt was the only obvious choice to make, even though he didn't want credit.
The full storyline was mostly my idea. I knew I wanted it to be more mainstream horror. I knew there had to be an epic creature battle of some kind at the climax, and I knew I wanted a strong female character that would grow and evolve over time. Bishop was written in about 90 days and to say that I was shocked by the response, even now, several years later with the third book on the way, would be an understatement. Bishop continues to be one of my best-selling books and one of my most well-known.
You can get Bishop online from the UD shop or from the 'zon and very soon, from a library near you. It is also on Audible.
